Comment of my review on "Cancer management during the COVID-19 world pandemic"

October 07, 2023

- It provides a comprehensive review of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer care and management. It covers a wide range of topics from effects on diagnosis and treatment to guidelines from governments and medical societies.

- It discusses specific changes to various cancer treatment modalities like chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy. It also examines impacts on different cancer types.

- It analyzes effects on both clinical and research aspects of cancer care. For example, it notes decreases in new cancer diagnoses and disruptions to clinical trials.

- The references are extensive with over 130 citations from the medical literature. This supports the conclusions and suggests the review was thoroughly researched.

- Some of the key findings are that cancer patients may have worse COVID-19 outcomes but postponing some treatments like for low-risk cancers can be acceptable. Treatment generally needs balancing risks from cancer vs virus.

- Guidelines emphasized prioritizing patients and limiting hospital visits to maintain cancer care while reducing virus spread. Telemedicine was also recommended when possible.

- Overall the document provides a very thorough examination of an important topic. Having this comprehensive review could help healthcare providers, researchers and patients understand challenges faced during the pandemic. The balancing of risks discussed is also useful guidance.

In summary, this is an excellent literature review that synthesizes a large amount of information on the impact of COVID-19 on cancer care. The depth of topics covered and discussion of treatment changes, guidelines and research effects makes it a valuable resource.
