Comment on my study "Tumour Infiltrating Lymphocytes and PD-L1 Expression as Potential Predictors of Outcome in Patients with Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma"

October 07, 2023

The paper is an original article published in Molecular Biology Reports in 2019. The study aimed to investigate the correlation between tumour infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression with overall survival (OS) in patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM).

The researchers analyzed 62 paraffin-embedded formalin-fixed samples from MPM patients and examined the expression of TILs and PD-L1. The patients were divided into four groups based on the percentage of TILs found per sample, and their OS was correlated with different TILs' expression patterns. Additionally, PD-L1 expression was assessed within the tumor and the adjacent stroma.

The results showed that higher expression of peritumoral TILs (Group 2 + 3) correlated with improved OS. On the other hand, PD-L1 expression appeared to be inversely correlated with clinical outcomes, although not statistically significant. No relationship between TILs and PD-L1 expression was identified. The study suggests that TILs and PD-L1 expression could serve as potential outcome predictors in MPM patients and warrants further investigation for their use as biomarkers for checkpoint inhibitors' efficacy.
